
When to Worry — Signs That It’s More Than Forgetfulness

Know the signs.
Catching Alzheimer’s early can lead to better care and more treatment options.
Memory loss that disrupts daily life
Forgetting recently learned info, asking the same questions repeatedly. Typical change: Occasionally forgetting names or appointments but remembering later.
Challenges in planning or solving problems
Struggling with recipes, bills, or concentration. Typical change: Making an occasional mistake with finances.
Difficulty completing familiar tasks
Trouble driving to a familiar place or operating appliances. Typical change: Needing help now and then with a microwave or TV remote.
Confusion with time or place
Losing track of time or forgetting where they are. Typical change: Getting confused about the day of the week but figuring it out later.
Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
Issues with reading, judging distance, or driving. Typical change: Vision changes related to aging or cataracts.
New problems with words in speaking or writing
Repeating thoughts, forgetting words, or naming objects incorrectly. Typical change: Occasionally struggling to find the right word.
Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
Putting things in strange places and being unable to find them. Typical change: Misplacing something and later retracing steps to find it.
Decreased or poor judgment
Poor decision-making with money or hygiene. Typical change: Making a bad decision every once in a while.
Withdrawal from work or social activities
Pulling back from conversations or hobbies. Typical change: Occasionally feeling uninterested in social events.
Changes in mood and personality
Becoming suspicious, anxious, or easily upset. Typical change: Becoming irritable when routines are disrupted.
