Prevent Waterborne Infections After Helene

Water advisories are in place across Southwest Florida following Hurricane Helene. Swimming after a storm can be dangerous as bacteria from street flooding and storm surge can be carried back into the Gulf after flooding recedes. Standing water from the storm is also prime for bacteria and means a higher risk of a small open wound escalating to a life-threatening infection.

Take the following precautions:

  • Do not swim in the Gulf until water quality has improved
  • Avoid wading through standing water
  • Avoid eating or drinking anything that has touched floodwaters
  • Immediately wash and clean all wounds
  • Seek medical care if wounds show signs of infections
