Mother’s Day is the Perfect Time to Reflect on Women’s Health

If you are struggling to think of the right gift this Mother’s Day, consider something many women rarely give themselves: time to focus on their health.
May is Women’s Health Month, which highlights the importance of preventive care, regular screenings, and healthy habits. Yet many women struggle to make these a priority. Women often spend years caring for family members, managing households, supporting partners, and helping friends and neighbors. In fact, about 60 percent of family caregivers in the United States are women, according to research from AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving. With so much attention focused on others, their own appointments and routines are easy to postpone.
That matters more than many people realize. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women in the United States, responsible for about one in every five female deaths, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Early detection is also critical in other areas of health. When breast cancer is found early and has not spread beyond the breast, the five-year survival rate is about 99 percent, according to the American Cancer Society.
Helping women prioritize their health does not require grand gestures. Often it comes down to practical support.
Offer to drive a spouse, friend, or parent to a medical appointment. Encourage a sister or neighbor to schedule a screening she has been putting off. Join a partner or friend for a walk, bike ride, or swim. Help with errands or household tasks so someone else can take the time for an exercise class, a medical visit, or simply a little rest.
Women often spend years caring for others. Women’s Health Month offers a chance for families, friends, and communities to return some of that care. Turning Mother’s Day into a month that supports women’s health might be one of the most meaningful gifts of all.
