An early look at the Clinic’s new imaging technology: a video update

CT scanner being delivered to COTF

In our latest Clinic of the Future video update, CEO Mark Driscoll is joined by Andrew Colburn, the Clinic’s Radiologic Technologist, for an early look at the new imaging rooms that will save hundreds of patients from having to drive off the island for hard-to-get imaging appointments.

Last week marked an exciting milestone as the Clinic’s new CT and X-ray systems were delivered to the building and installation began. These technologies, and ultrasound, which will arrive in the summer, represent a major upgrade in diagnostic imaging and will significantly expand the Clinic’s ability to diagnose conditions on the island.

Today, imaging is the Clinic’s most common referral. Nearly 1,200 patients each year are referred off the island for imaging tests, including almost 350 CT scans alone. With the new CT, X-ray, and ultrasound capabilities, many of those scans can be performed here, helping patients get answers faster and avoid unnecessary travel.

The new GE imaging systems represent a major leap forward in technology for the Clinic. The 64-slice CT scanner can complete many scans in about a minute while producing thousands of detailed images. In urgent situations, scans can be transmitted immediately to a radiologist, with results potentially returned within about an hour, far faster than the days it can currently take when imaging is performed off the island.

The CT technology will also allow physicians to evaluate a wider range of conditions on the island, including imaging of the abdomen, pelvis, spine, and liver, capabilities that were not previously available at the Clinic. The imaging room was also designed with specialized infrastructure to enable equipment upgrades as new technology becomes available in the future.
